The Lookout is the room the house was built for. The coastguards kept their watch from this corner for sixty years, and from the bed you can see what they saw: the whole bay, the lifeboat slip, Gull Point and, on a clear day, the lighthouse forty kilometres along the coast.
It has two windows and a pair of glass doors. The doors open onto a private stone terrace with two old teak chairs and a table just big enough for a pot of coffee and a bottle of wine. The copper bath stands at the other window, so you can watch the weather come in from the bath.
Inside it is calm and plain: limewashed walls, the original floorboards, linen at the windows and on the bed, wool from a mill up the coast, a few good books. There is no television. There is a record player and a box of records, and a pair of binoculars for the seals.
Breakfast comes to the room on a tray if you’d like it, or join us downstairs. The suite is up one flight of stairs from the hall.
