At the very top of the house the roof opens out into one long room under the oak beams. The window at the end is round, like a porthole, and looks straight down on the harbour: the fishing boats going out at first light, the lifeboat slip, the gulls arguing on the wall.

Under the eaves is a nook with a small bed made up in striped linen, for a child who likes a den. There’s a box of games, buckets and crabbing lines for the harbour wall, and hot chocolate on the tray.

It’s two flights up an old, steady staircase, and worth every step.
