The coast path from the door

Three walks that start at our gate, from an hour round Gull Point to a whole day to the lighthouse and back on the bus, with where to stop for tea.

A narrow path winding along green cliff tops through sea pinks and gorse, a wooden gate and the sea beyond

The coast path runs right past our garden wall. Turn left at the gate and you’re on it; we keep maps, a flask and walking poles in the hall for anyone who wants them.

Round Gull Point (an hour)

Left along the cliff to Gull Point, where the seals haul out on the rocks below at low tide, then back over the top field and down the lane. Easy, with one stile. Best in the evening, when the light comes round onto the point.

To St Elwyn’s Cove (half a day)

Right from the gate, down to the harbour, up the steps past the old pilchard cellars and along the cliffs for six kilometres to St Elwyn’s. There’s a café in the old chapel that does crab sandwiches until three. A taxi back is £18; we’ll call it for you.

To the lighthouse (a day)

Twenty kilometres of the finest stretch of this coast, with three steep valleys. Leave after breakfast, walk west to the lighthouse and come back on the 4.40 bus, which stops at the top of our lane. Ask the kitchen for a packed lunch the night before.

What to bring

Proper shoes (the path is rough and the cliffs are high), a layer for the wind, water. Dogs on a lead near the sheep, and keep well back from the edge.
